MRS. WHEELBARROW’S WHOLE-CRANBERRY RASPBERRY SAUCE

It snowed last night; not much in terms of what’s on the ground – less than 3-inches of the white stuff. Today the sun bounces off the glistening white; I see the tall, now bare trees, swaying in the wind and every once in a while a gust tosses the powder-sugar-like stuff from our roof through the air and onto a new landing spot. It feels very much like I’m on the inside of a snow globe – and I’m grateful to be inside the globe instead of outside the globe because tonight’s temperature is expected to be 7 degrees. Far too early for winter as it’s just the week before Thanksgiving. Somebody hold me.

GLUTEN-FREE BROWN-BUTTER YEASTED WAFFLES

Waffles were a big deal at the little house on Ankeny Street; my mother had a large waffle baker that had a long black ‘fabric-type’ of cord with little gold threads running through it. She would make one very large waffle or 4 individual pieces could be torn apart and shared; butter, jam or maple syrup was passed around the table and we were convinced we were the luckiest kids on the street.

GLUTEN-FREE BERRY CRUMBLE FROM GRACE’S SWEET LIFE

I met Grace via Twitter long before we actually met in person; eager to share, to assist, to help in any way, Grace is one of those people you want for your neighbor. And not just because of her genuine kindness but also because Grace is a master when it comes to making jaw-dropping Italian desserts.

GUEST POST: THE PROFESSOR’S GELATO & SOMEONE’S BIRTHDAY

Musical pairing – Bless the Broken Road by Rascal Flatts

This is The Professor, and I’m making my second guest post here on Smith Bites. My last post was after classes ended for Winter Break when I had a little free time, which gave Debra a little respite from her writing. While “free time” isn’t in my vocabulary at this time of year, I really want to share this fabulous and simple gelato recipe that accompanies an equally fabulous celebration.

You see, someone’s having a birthday today . . . Now I’m not sure just how celebratory someone is feeling about growing a year older (and really, how many women get excited about another birthday whizzing by?) but I always make it a celebration. I am fortunate that her birthday is sandwiched between Valentine’s Day and our Wedding Anniversary, so there are plenty of opportunities to shower her with flowers, gifts and romantic meals.  Let’s just say it was a whirlwind of emotions that February of 1998, but we’ll save that story for another post.

I’M NOT DUTCH, BUT THIS BABY IS!

Musical pairing – Easy by Commodores

Twitter is full of comments about life being crazy busy right now and I must confess, I find myself in the same boat.  Where are the lazy days of summer that songwriters wax poetic about ‘cuz they sure ain’t hangin’ around here – we are running from one forest fire to the next!  Who has time to make a proper breakfast?
