BIG SUMMER POTLUCK & DOUGHNUT MUFFINS

Musical pairing – Taking Chances by Celine Dion

I DID IT!!! I flew by myself to Pennsylvania last Friday, rented a car and drove BY MYSELF (with Lilly’s help – I’ve named my GPS Lilly) to the home of ThreeManyCooks and met people I only knew on Twitter; then flew back home on Sunday – YAY FOR ME!!! Only a couple of times where I panicked – once when I couldn’t figure out how to get out of the rental car parking lot . . . go ahead I’ll wait for the laughter to die down . . . and once on the return of said car to the same said parking lot at 5am when I learned that they weren’t open that time of morning.  My plane was to take off at 6:05 and I still had to print my boarding pass and get thru security . . . but in my defense, I hadn’t slept but 10 hours over the last three days . . . so there may have been a teeny bit of hysteria during that part of the trip . . .  yes, I am a wuss and a drama queen all rolled into one . . .

I’M NOT DUTCH, BUT THIS BABY IS!

Musical pairing – Easy by Commodores

Twitter is full of comments about life being crazy busy right now and I must confess, I find myself in the same boat.  Where are the lazy days of summer that songwriters wax poetic about ‘cuz they sure ain’t hangin’ around here – we are running from one forest fire to the next!  Who has time to make a proper breakfast?

DR. DOM CARISTI & AFFOGATO – NOT YOUR AVERAGE CUP OF JOE

Dr. Dom Caristi

CLICK HERE TO LISTEN – Smith Bites Interview with Dr. Dom Caristi

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down for a chat with Dr. Dom Caristi, one of The Professor’s colleagues at Ball State University; Dom and his wife, Kim are also good friends of ours and they fed us a wonderful dinner that evening.  I asked Dom to share his experiences about his Italian heritage and what he observed while teaching in Macerata (MAH-chuh-RAH-tuh), Italy in 2008.  I do hope you’ll take the time to listen – Dom is both entertaining and knowledgeable about the food culture in Italy – he has some great stories to tell!

A NOT-SO-TEXAS COOKIE SHEET CAKE

Musical pairing – If I Knew You Were Comin’ I’d Have Baked A Cake by Eileen Barton

This post is a labor of love, and by that I mean that I count myself very fortunate to have married into one of the best families ever – and that includes my cousins on the Green side:  Liz, Brenda, David and Andrea.  We don’t see each other very often even though we live relatively close, but Facebook has kept us connected – which is how I ended up with this recipe and the memories that come with it.

2010 . . . A MID-SUMMER GARDEN PIZZA VIDEO

I’m having one of those ‘Rip Van Winkle’ moments because I just  cannot fathom that I’m actually using the words, ‘mid-summer.’ Then I look at the calendar and remember that the temperatures have been above 90 for the past couple of weeks and our gardens do indeed, remind me that it really is mid-summer – there’s a bounty to be picked and enjoyed!  We’ve put together a ‘mid-summer’ garden tour – so take a minute and walk with us – we’ll show you around!

VIETNAMESE-COFFEE CUPCAKES & A PARTY FOR 2

Musical pairing – Just the Two of Us by Bill Withers

It was a perfect holiday weekend for The Professor and me; for several years, we’ve hosted a July 4th party at our home with 20+ invited guests.  A whole lotta food and many hours later, we’re spent but very, very happy and content knowing we have such great family and friends.  Last year’s July 4th, we were in Connecticut and didn’t have our party; this year we’ve traveled quite a bit and are now in the process of updating our dining room so we didn’t plan a party . . . not a big party anyway . . . but the perfect party for two which included these lovely Vietnamese Cupcakes.

4TH OF JULY WATERMELON SALAD

Musical pairing – Bang Bang by David Sanborn

Well here we are, 4th of July weekend . . . also the end of the week and you’re either having guests for the holiday or you’ve been invited to someone’s party.  And you’re supposed to bring something to share . . . problem is you just don’t have the energy to flip through magazines or that binder of recipes tucked away in a kitchen drawer to find something to make.  Sound familiar? You’re not alone. In fact, this is me right now. So here’s what I’m making – this super delicious, cool and refreshing Watermelon Salad with Jalapeno and Lime . . .

BLAME IT ON TWITTER – THE POMMY & MARIE

Musical pairing – A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock and Roll by Donny & Marie Osmond

It all started last week when a thread on Twitter caught my eye between Elle’s Kitchen, DuoDishes, AGoodAppetite and Vino Luci mentioning a drink called, ‘The Arnie Palmer’ – which turns out to be plain brewed iced tea sweetened with lemonade – 2/3 tea to 1/3 lemonade . . . who knew??     Because ever since I had the iced tea special at Gayle’s Bakery in Santa Cruz, I’ve been dying to create my own summer drink; I also wanted something pretty and I was fascinated by the layered effect that Gayle’s was able to achieve.

DIM SUM . . . and then some . . .

Musical pairing – Waiting For The Sun by Future Loop Foundation

No matter how well you plan something, “stuff” happens, and never is this more true than when traveling.  When we made a quick 3-day trip to Salt Lake City back in May, our intentions were to see our granddaughter, meet Maria and Josh from TwoPeasAndTheirPod, and check out some local culinary establishments – quite a bit for 3 short days.  The Professor takes great pride in planning our trips and he does a fantastic job.  In his Internet research wizardry, he also found that the Viking Cooking School in Salt Lake City offers some pretty fantastic cooking classes.  Our first cooking class together was during our trip to Charleston, SC in March and was a blast – besides, this cooking class would be about Dim Sum!

SUPER QUICK, SUPER EASY ITALIAN PASTA SALAD

Musical pairing – Blue Skies by Eva Cassidy

I have always turned up my nose at pasta salads because, horror of horrors, I’m not a fan of mayonnaise and most recipes are dripping with the stuff . . . and cheese . . . and bacon . . . and peas . . . and a multitude of other ingredients making the end result much too starchy and gloppy for my taste.

HOME AGAIN & DISHIN’ W/MAC

Musical pairing – Meet Me in California by Plain White T’s

I’m baaaccckkkkk from a week in Santa Cruz with lots of crazy adventures like our forced march, hike through the Redwood forest (that’s us – the tiny group at the bottom left of that very big tree).  The climb took 4 + hours to complete – 4 miles hiking up 500 feet and back down again.  Believe me, there were times . . . oh who am I kidding . . . there were MANY, MANY times I wanted to quit but I persevered and made it . . . last into camp, but I was upright and no paramedics were called; a feat in-and-of-itself considering just how out of shape I am!
