Human by Jon McLaughlin on Grooveshark
Musical pairing – Human by Jon McLaughlin

When I asked The Professor for his advice on which angle to write this post . . . his reply was, ‘What about how much of a struggle the recipe was?’ To which I said, ‘Oh, you mean from the point of my failures?’ He then said, ‘I don’t like using the word ‘failure’ . . . I prefer the word . . . ‘challenging” . . . well alrighty then . . . let’s just say that the recipe was ‘challenging’ and at the end of it all, I had one ‘failure’ . . . of epic proportions . . .

MARTHA’S CHOCOLATE-CARAMEL COOKIE BARS

Hi everyone!  I’m thrilled to be helping out my dear friend Gwen of Bunkycooks, who is recovering from ankle surgery this week; now let me be clear that I’m not happy she needed surgery but am happy that she asked if I might help her out this week.  I’m such a fan of Bunkycooks and look forward to reading her posts – she makes some pretty fabulous recipes and I have to say, I was most impressed by the fact that she made her own birthday cake this year – ala ‘Cat In The Hat’ style – I want a Cat In The Hat cake for my birthday!

MARTHA’S SWEET CORN W/BABY BEETS & BASIL

Musical pairing – The Beat Goes On by Sonny & Cher

Our garden is beginning to wind down but we’re planning to try some cool weather plantings which we’ve never done before so that will be an interesting experiment.  Niece Avery has been dropped off for her first year at Indiana University in Bloomington; The Professor is back on campus for another year, the sun has changed positions, our days are shorter, nights longer and I hear the distinct sound of the crickets.

CAN’T JUDGE A BOOK SIGNING . . . & CANTALOUPE

Musical pairing – Missed Opportunity by Hall & Oates

Last March, The Professor and I took our first trip to Charleston, SC and absolutely fell head-over-heels in love!  Instead of staying in a hotel, we rented a house about one block from one of the prettiest beaches I’ve ever seen and spent the entire week riding bicycles, combing the beach for shells and discovering all that Charleston and it’s rich history has to offer – including the food . . . oh my stars-and-garters, the food.

FABULOUS CHOCOLATE BRANDY SAUCE

Musical pairing – You Sexy Thing by Hot Chocolate

A couple of weeks ago, I woke up feeling very much like I still wanted to be on vacation back in Santa Cruz; in fact, I was really wishing we had a Gayle’s Bakery so that I could peruse their gorgeous cases of pastry!  But alas, I clicked my heels three times and I was definitely still in Kansas . . . well, Indiana, but close enough.  Anyhoo . . . because I still wanted to be on vacation and was craving pastry, I decided to make doughnut holes – and not just any doughnut holes, but doughnut holes that were dipped in chocolate sauce – a fabulous Martha Stewart Chocolate Brandy Sauce!
