IT’S PERSONAL

The month of May is National Celiac Awareness month.

And while I could rattle off the numbers of people who have Celiac or some form of wheat intolerance or allergy, I’m going to share some of our family’s story instead. Why? For me, it’s personal; it hits deeply and closely to home. I have celiac, and so does my sister, so it doesn’t get more personal than this.

POTATO CHOWDER

[grooveshark width=”250″ height=”40″ id=”34186306″ style=”metal”]
Musical pairing – I Won’t Give Up by Jason Mraz

For as long as I can remember, I dreamed of being a singer – on Broadway or as a solo artist, ala Barbra Streisand, my hero at the time. I was singing at 18 months old and had entered my first talent contest at 5 and by High School I ranked 2nd in my State’s Solo and Ensemble competition.

GOAT CHEESE & PISTACHIO STUFFED DATES

There was a time when I wouldn’t give dates a second look . . . not that kind of date! My mother would bake a date cake occasionally that required the purchase of, I believe, a yellow and red box of diced up date bits, then added to the usual suspects of flour, sugar, butter, eggs and spices . . . but I don’t recall what it tastes like . . . mainly because I don’t recall ever having a piece of it . . . dates were suspect in my 10-year-old mind . . .

ASPARAGUS TART

Musical pairing – Celebration by Kool & The Gang

Easter came late this year and Cinco de Mayo, the Kentucky Derby and Mother’s Day all happen this week . . . oh and add college graduations in there and I’d say we have a very full dance card . . .

SKILLET BAKED EGGS

Musical pairing – The Way I Am by Ingrid Michaelson

This will be one of those short and sweet posts because a couple of months ago, I promised the egg dish to these biscuits and now I’m going to fulfill that promise! If you’ve been reading Smith Bites for a while, you’ll know that we are big, big fans of Virginia Willis and her recipes; in fact, we’re on the list to receive her ‘Southern Saturdays’ by email which is where this particular egg dish comes from.

VIRGINIA’S COUNTRY HAM CHEDDAR BISCUITS

Musical pairing – Country Strong by Gwyneth Paltrow

I would have to say that one of the perks of being a food blogger is having the opportunity to be surrounded by so many fabulous home-cooks as well as meeting some mighty fine chefs – and let me just tell you, these people bring their A-game to the blogging world! Last fall I met Chef Virginia Willis who is just as gracious as a Southerner can be. I had been reading her blog for a while and I subscribed to her newsletter so when this Country Ham Cheddar Biscuit recipe showed up in my email, I knew we’d be making them.

SUNDAY SUPPERS; CRISP POTATO BITES W/SMOKED SALMON, SOUR CREAM & CHIVES

Musical pairing – Perfect Day by Lady Antebellum

Sundays were always what my mother called, ‘Big Meal’ or ‘Big Meat’ days and always included a pot roast, chicken, ham or a meatloaf;  that meant that there would be leftovers to stretch into the next week for lunches and/or a new creation using those leftovers for supper.  I remember my entire family sitting around the rectangular-shaped dining room table in a teeny-tiny house in Walla Walla – no TV, no phone calls allowed (back in the day when phones actually hung on a wall . . .) Dad at one end, mom at the other end, me and one sister on the side nearest the wall and my brother and baby sister across – we were all sandwiched into a space about  10′ by 8′ . . . wow, now that I think about it, it’s a wonder we didn’t kill one another!
