A FINE, HAPPY DAY

I have a ‘to-do’ list a mile long but here I sit in the semi-darkness as the sun begins to peek over the horizon; we’ve just returned from a week’s shoot in Italy with one day of semi-rest before we were staring down Monday morning. I’m grateful for the quietness in the house as it allows me to gather my thoughts and click out the words on my keyboard – no recipe today but a few of you have sent me notes of encouragement on the loss of our granddaughter Alice; the anniversary of her passing was yesterday and I just wanted to take a moment to say ‘thank you’ for remembering.

Musical pairing – So Small by Carrie Underwood

My oldest son and his family moved to Indiana last month; the last year without Alice has been difficult and everyone felt they needed a new start – new job, new home, new beginning, moving forward.┬áSo they packed up their house in New Hampshire, along with Alice’s brother, Doug, 3 Labrador dogs and hit the road heading West to Indiana.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALICE

Sometimes you just gotta put your head down and move forward. I have danced around this post for the last two months wishing that I, that my family, wouldn’t have to face this day. But today is here and rather than spend it in bed with ivory-colored, 100 percent, 600-thread count cotton sheets pulled up over my head, I am going to celebrate Alice’s birthday with the same tenacity in which she lived her life.

52 sundays; april 8, 2012 – EASTER SUNDAY

I’m not sure why some holidays more than others make me think of Alice but Easter is one of them. And I noticed yesterday as The Professor and I were enjoying the hustle-bustle of Findlay Market in Cincinnati that you couldn’t miss the fact that Easter was here: chocolate bunnies, hot-cross buns, fresh hams and tabletop displays of large, paper mache’ eggs intertwined with twigs and flowers all set the stage for today’s celebration and gathering of families.
