JALAPENO-CHEDDAR SCONES

Musical pairing – I’m on Fire by Bruce Springsteen

Pssst . . . not to be the bearer of bad news but (deep breath) . . . . Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away.  I don’t know about you, but this time of year gets super busy in our house and since we love hosting Thanksgiving, I look for recipes that can be made a day or two ahead or things I can make ahead and freeze – like these Jalapeno-Cheddar scones.  I made these for last year’s Thanksgiving dinner and there wasn’t a single crumb left . . . not a creature was stirring, not even a . . . oh wait . . . wrong holiday . . .

SUNDAY SUPPERS; CRISP POTATO BITES W/SMOKED SALMON, SOUR CREAM & CHIVES

Musical pairing – Perfect Day by Lady Antebellum

Sundays were always what my mother called, ‘Big Meal’ or ‘Big Meat’ days and always included a pot roast, chicken, ham or a meatloaf;  that meant that there would be leftovers to stretch into the next week for lunches and/or a new creation using those leftovers for supper.  I remember my entire family sitting around the rectangular-shaped dining room table in a teeny-tiny house in Walla Walla – no TV, no phone calls allowed (back in the day when phones actually hung on a wall . . .) Dad at one end, mom at the other end, me and one sister on the side nearest the wall and my brother and baby sister across – we were all sandwiched into a space about  10′ by 8′ . . . wow, now that I think about it, it’s a wonder we didn’t kill one another!

PIZZA WITH RADICCHIO, PEARS, GORGONZOLA AND WALNUTS

One of my favorite memories as a child was pizza night – which is crazy now that I think about it because my mom made it with sliced deli meat salami, black olives, canned mushrooms and shredded mozzarella cheese that she grated on a box grater – there was no such thing as pre-shredded cheese in those days (and no, I did not ride a horse to school or live in a Little House on the Prairie).

LORRAINE'S CLAM DIP

There’s a picture of my family that was taken at my sister’s home in Arizona, December 2000; it was the last Christmas we would have with my dad who died from cancer September 7th, 2001, just four days before 9/11.  It sits on my grandmother’s silverware chest – fitting because it belongs to my father’s mother and also because it sits in the dining room – the room where meals are shared at big family gatherings as well as small intimate dinners with friends.   And there is a full view into the kitchen – the place where, for me, I’m completely in the zone – happy, content, peaceful . . . at home.
