Musical pairing – When I Fall In Love by Celine Dion and Clive Griffon

Happy Anniversary Professor . . . you are the love of my life, my true North, my rock, my best friend . . . it is hard to believe that 14 years have come and gone . . . And I wouldn’t trade them for all the money in the world because really, what we have . . . what we share . . . cannot be purchased with any amount of money, silver or gold . . .

That Spring day 14 years ago was unusually warm, in the 60s I believe, and the sun was out in full force; I spent my day leisurely preparing for our evening wedding. You, I believe, worked.  A simple wedding, we managed to pull it together in 10 days . . . everything seemed to fall together effortlessly: the tiny, white-steeple church on the college campus, your good friend and minister who married us, the small but perfect white cake was decorated with nothing but flowers. Even the flower girl, our niece Avery, exclaimed, ‘I have waited my whole life to be a flower girl!’ (she was 5 . . .)

You picked me up around 6 and we drove the half-mile to the church in a silver Honda Civic; one of my friends took family photos, and since none of my family could attend the wedding, my co-workers banded together, decorated the church, arranged the music and helped make our day special. Your parents arranged a small reception at the local Country Club . . . and when the ceremony was over, my new father-in-law walked towards me and said, ‘Welcome to the family!’ And I have felt welcomed every. single. day . . .

Together we have watched nieces and nephews graduate high school and grandbabies born, we have buried grandparents, uncles, cousins, a parent and just last year, a grandchild; we’ve celebrated birthdays, milestone anniversaries. 14 years of New Years, Valentine’s Days, Easters, Mother’s Days, Memorial Days, Father’s Days, 4th of July’s, Labor Days, Halloweens, Thanksgivings and Christmases . . . 14 years of cooking for people and welcoming those who come into our home with arms wide open. Tender sweet memories, rich with stories of tears and laughter, failures and triumphs, deep sadness and overwhelming joy come flooding back today as if they happened last week . . .

You changed my life Professor, turned it upside down and together we have created a life that I could not possibly dream for myself . . . I am happy, I am content, I am ‘full-to-the-brimmels’ as niece Lydia would say . . .

You betwixt me body and soul Professor . . . here’s to another 14 years . . .
